Wood, like most living organisms, is a "cellular substrate". Nature’s own defense mechanism that protected the beauty of your wood when it was part of a tree was its tree oils, saps, and resins, which flow to the leaves and branches from the roots of the tree. These oils feed and moisturize the tree, maintaining its strength and stability. Regardless where a board is cut from a tree, the surface will be made up of cut cells that are exposed to the surface like little catch basins.

When these boards are constructed to make an architectural structure, the wood is subjected to an infinite number of punishments from nature. Constant wetting and drying, freezing and thawing, and spore (a form of fungus) that will root into the wood and feed off moisture and wood cells.

If we were to stand over a wooden structure and view the wood cells, we see the results of the punishment that nature has inflicted. Three substances remain in the wood cells that alter its original beauty: 1) Microscopically small particles of dust, 2) Emissions (air pollution), 3) Tree pollen (present even in urban areas). The particles that are larger than the wood-cell will be blown from the wood by wind or washed off by rain. The particles which are smaller than the cell will fall into the cavity and become trapped. As the wood cells fill, we no longer see the bottoms, only the cell walls. Therefore, the majority of the colour we see is gray, which is the colour of the dust, emissions, and pollen.
